GREENVILLE — Quarterbacks Mitch Griffis and Emory Williams were on public display Saturday as East Carolina held its annual Purple-Gold scrimmage to complete spring practice at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

The Pirates are coming off a 9-4 season and do not have a returning starting quarterback in the program.

Griffis, who transferred from Texas Tech, directed a 7-play scoring drive that covered 65 yards, including the last seven yards on a run by Ashton Gray, a transfer from North Texas. Andrew Conrad kicked the conversion.

Gray had 16 carries for 152 yards and two touchdowns for the Mean Green in a 49-47 win over San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl. New ECU offensive coordinator Jordan Davis previously was at North Texas.

Cole Hodge, a back-up at ECU last year, had a 3-yard scoring pass to  Mason Scott that capped a 14-play series of 60 yards. Noah Perez added the extra point.

The 90-minute session featured a 7-on-7 segment before the scrimmage and wrapped up with a red zone shootout.

The defense took the shootout, 19-15, although Williams had a 25-yard TD pass to former Miami teammate Ray Ray Joseph.

Crews Law and Javon Williams had sacks among the defensive leaders. Making tackles for losses were Preston Carr, Christian Peterson, Ashton Levells-Mitchell and L.J. Porter.

“We got in some good work,” said Pirates coach Blake Harrell. “There’s aways a fine line coming out here. You try to do too much and somebody gets banged up. We got out healthy.”

Harrell saw improvement in the quarterbacks.

“They’re starting to get more comfortable,” Harrell said. “I think this was the first scrimmage we had no turnovers, so we’ll have to get on the defense about that.

“The defense ended up winning the shootout. We tell the offense you win with touchd0wns. We tell the defense you win by holding the opponent to field goals.”

Conrad, Perez and Everett Scott did the placekicking.

The annual event was one of the warmest ever with the temperature in the low 90s.

“We got after it,” Griffis said of spring ball. “We’ve got a lot of talented guys. Great receivers, tailbacks and offensive line. I need to give them the ball and they’ll get the job done.

“I don’t have to do too much, just do my job.”

Williams said he wants to work on being more spontaneous.

“Trusting my gut,” he said. “Be a more instinctual player. Work on mechanics with my foot speed. Continue to learn and build relationships.

“A long list of to dos for the offseason.”

The Pirates will continue strength and conditioning as well as position work before preseason camp gets underway the first week of August.

ECU opens the season at Alabama on Sept. 5. The first home game will be Sept. 12 against Appalachian State.
