GREENVILLE —Alabama-Birmingham avoided a sweep with an 11-4 win at East Carolina on Sunday, bouncing back from an 18-1 loss on Saturday that clinched the 3-game American Conference series for the Pirates.
ECU slipped to 15-9-1 overall and 2-1 in league play going into a nonconference contest at Duke (16-10) on Tuesday at 4 p.m. (ACC Network).
The Blazers (14-10, 1-2 American) took the lead in the first on Sunday on an RBI single by Brady Waugh and added four runs in the second. Wesley Helms hit a solo homer to left. J.P. Head had an RBI double. Kevin Hall Jr. scored on a wild pitch and Head came home on a ground out by Alex Depuy.
The Pirates pulled within 5-1 in the second on a sacrifice fly by Walker Barron.
Davin Whitaker scored for the Pirates in the fourth on a grounder to short by Grady Lanahan that was misplayed.
UAB went ahead, 6-2, in the fifth when a run scored on a ground out to second by Helms.
Lanahan homered to left center in the sixth to cut the lead to 6-3.
Bunts by Baylor Roberts and Hall as well as a single through the right side by Head produced runs for the visitors in the seventh.
Lanahan’s RBI double in the eighth got ECU within 9-4.
Head hit his 13th homer of the season, a 2-run shot to right, to close the scoring in the ninth.
Brett Antolick (2-2) started for the Pirates. He yielded five earned runs in an inning and one-third, taking the loss.
ECU pitchers issued six walks and hit two batters.
Braxton Shelton (1-1) got the win.
Head had three hits and drove in four runs as UAB had an 11-5 lead in hits.
