CONWAY, SC — Rex Watson did it again for No. 16 Coastal Carolina.
Watson hit a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning of a 10-6 Coastal win over East Carolina on Friday night and his 3-run homer in a 6-run eighth inning Saturday put the Chanticleers ahead to stay in a 7-1 win.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer down the left field line by Braden Burress.
The hosts tied the score in the fourth on Cole Chamberlain’s sacrifice fly, the only run allowed by ECU right-hander Gavin Van Kempen.
“We wasted a good start by Van Kempen,” said Coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network.
Van Kempen went seven innings. He yielded three hits and one run (earned) with three walks and 11 strikeouts.
Brett Antolick (0-1) yielded six runs in the eighth (two earned) and was charged with the loss.
Coastal’s eighth included an RBI double by Chamberlain and a 2-run homer by Brice Estep.
Ross Norman (2-2) started and went eight innings for Coastal, limiting the Pirates to four hits. He walked one and struck out four. Daniel Parker pitched the ninth.
Burress, Matthew Lashley, Jack Vogele, Colby Wallace and Walker Barron had hits for ECU.
Coastal (9-5) hosts the Pirates (7-7-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. with ECU seeking to avoid a sweep.
