CONWAY, SC — No. 16 Coastal Carolina walked off with a 10-6 win over East Carolina on Friday night with a 2-strike, 2-out opposite field grand slam by left-handed hitter Rex Watson in the bottom of the 10th inning.
The Pirates (7-6-1) will look to even the series against the Chanticleers (8-5) on Saturday at 2 p.m. (ESPN+).
ECU trailed, 4-0, through five innings on Friday night. The Pirates scored one run in the sixth when Braden Burress came in on a single by Grady Lanahan with a throwing error.
A 2-run homer by pinch hitter Michael Kalinich provided the spark for ECU in a 5-run eighth as the Pirates took a 6-4 lead. Austin Irby and Jeff Sabater had RBI singles before Colby Wallace drew a bases-loaded walk.
Blake Barthol had a 2-run single in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at 6.
“We didn’t play well enough early,” said Coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network. “Proud of the way the guys battled back, but we’ve got to be better in all three phases if we’re going to beat a championship team on the road.”
Ethan Norby started and went six innings for ECU. He allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned) with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Ethan Rose (0-1) yielded a hit to start the 10th and was charged with the loss. Lefty Nick Moran surrendered the game-ending blow.
