GREENVILLE — Wichita State managed to pry a 92-89 American Conference double-overtime victory from the jaws of defeat at East Carolina on Wednesday night despite a career-high 40 points by Jordan Riley.

The Shockers (17-10, 9-5 American) got a 4-point play from Kenyon Giles with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 69. There did not appear to be contact in the act of shooting on the play.

The Pirates (9-17, 4-9) were inbounding from behind the Shockers basket with a 78-76 lead with five seconds left in the first overtime. ECU turned the ball over and Giles made a 14-footer under pressure to bring on the second extra period.

T.J. Williams scored for the Shockers with 22 seconds left in the second overtime for a 90-89 lead. ECU called time with 16 seconds left but Riley was called for stepping out of bounds following an inbounds pass from side court.

The Pirates were without ball handling guard Corey Caulker for all but six minutes of the game due to a foot injury.

Giovanni Emejuru had 16 points for ECU. Demetri Gardner scored 14. Eli DeLaurier had nine points and Isaiah Mbeng added eight points.

DeLaurier had a game-high 14 rebounds and Riley grabbed 10.

Williams led Wichita State with 27 points and Giles scored 24.

Pirates coach Mike Schwartz lamented a 16 for 28 free throw shooting performance (57.1 percent). ECU made three of 13 from beyond the arc, 23.1 percent.

The Pirates play at Charlotte (13-13, 7-6) on Saturday at noon (ESPN2).
