GREENVILLE — Ethan Norby and Colby Wallace led East Carolina to a 7-0 win over No. 24 Coastal Carolina at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Friday.
The Pirates won their fourth straight to improve to 7-6 as Norby had 19 strikeouts in seven and one-third innings.
Wallace hit a 2-run homer in the fourth inning to put the Pirates ahead to stay and he connected for a grand slam in the fifth.
Norby surpassed the previous American Athletic Conference record of 18 whiffs set by Jonathan Bowlan of Memphis on April 28, 2018.
Hal Baird’s individual program record of 20 strikeouts on May 8, 1970, remained intact.
Ethan Young came on in relief to fan three over the last one and two-thirds frames. The total of 22 strikeouts between Norby and Young matched the combined total in the ECU record book established in 2024 against William & Mary.
Norby struck out the first nine batters. Coastal (10-4) did not have a baserunner until Dean Mihos singled to start the seventh.
Walker Barron, Braden Burress and Alex Bouche had two hits each as ECU outhit the Chanticleers, 12-4.
Bouche had an RBI double in the eighth to score Burress.
The second matchup in a 3-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. (ESPN+).
