GREENVILLE — East Carolina completed a regular season sweep of Charlotte with a 78-76 win in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Sunday.
Senior R.J. Felton had 27 points on 9-for-17 field goal shooting on Senior Day as the Pirates improved to 17-12 overall and 9-7 in the American Athletic Conference.
“There’s no place like home, and East Carolina is my home,” Felton said. “The coaching staff believes in me, and I believe in them. I trust in the process.
“My biggest goal before I got here was I wanted to change the culture. I always said I want to win here. I want to be one of the best players and one of the best winners over here.”
ECU is assured of a winning season for the first time since 2012-13. Its nine league wins are the most since joining the AAC in 2014.
Jayshayne Woodard had 14 points. Jordan Riley scored 13 and claimed 11 rebounds.
Senior C.J. Walker had nine points and classmate Cam Hayes added six points with seven rebounds.
Charlotte (10-19, 3-13 AAC) was led by Nik Graves with 32 points.
The Pirates led 78-70 in the final minute but the 49ers made a push and Graves missed a potential winning three in the closing seconds.
ECU had a 70-57 advantage with 3:54 to go.
“I didn’t think the game ended quite the way we would’ve liked it to,” said third-year Pirates coach Mike Schwartz. “But as we talked about in the locker room — whether it’s good or not so good — we’re going to try to find a way to get better from it.”
ECU hosts Tulane (17-12, 11-5 AAC) on Thursday at 7 p.m. (ESPN+).
