GREENVILLE — East Carolina was a 6-1 winner over Virginia Tech in the final game of the Keith LeClair Classic at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Sunday.
Both clubs went 2-1 in the 22nd annual event but the Pirates claimed the title by virtue of winning the head-to-head meeting.
ECU never trailed after a 2-run homer by junior shortstop Alex Bouche, a transfer from Old Dominion, in the bottom of the fourth.
The Hokies (8-3) got within 2-1 on an RBI single by Sam Tackett in the sixth.
The Pirates scored once in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Michael Kalinich that brought in Dixon Williams, who had singled and stolen second before advancing to third on a wild pitch.
ECU (5-6) scored three times in the eighth after a leadoff single by Austin Irby. Kalinich singled and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Braden Burress had a 2-run double for a 5-1 lead.
Burress came home on a wild pitch for the final run.
Bouche and Williams each had two hits.
Lance Williams started on the mound for the Pirates and turned in two and one-third scoreless innings. Ethan Young (1-0) took the bump for three and one-third innings. He allowed two hits and one run (earned) with four walks and six strikeouts,
Brad Pruett recorded his first save, striking out six in three and one-third innings.
Next up for ECU will be a matchup with Gardner-Webb (6-7) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Segra Stadium in Fayetteville.
