CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina clinched its series with East Carolina on an 11-6 win Sunday at Boshamer Stadium.
The sixth-ranked Tar Heels (6-0) will go for a sweep at ECU (2-4) on Monday at 5 p.m.
The Pirates overcame a 3-0 deficit from a 3-run homer in the first inning by Luke Stevenson to lead, 5-3, but the hosts battled back with two runs in the fifth, two more in the sixth and a 4-run eighth.
Michael Kalinich had a run-scoring double for ECU in the third and later scored on a single by Kenan Bowman as the Pirates closed within 3-2.
Walker Barrom’s 2-run homer in the fourth put ECU ahead, 4-3. The Pirates went on top, 5-3, in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jack Herring.
UNC tied the score in the fifth on an RBI single by Hunter Stokely and a fielder’s choice by Jackson Van De Brake that brought in Tyson Bass.
Alex Bouche hit a solo homer to left for a 6-5 ECU lead in the sixth.
The hosts retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Bass doubled in the tying and Stokely drove in the go-ahead run with a single to left.
Kane Kepley’s 2-run triple capped the scoring in the eighth.
Folger Boaz (1-0) was credited with the win, Lance Williams (0-1), one of eight ECU pitchers, was charged with the loss.
Stokely went 4-for-5 for the Tar Heels with three RBIs as UNC led, 13-10, in hits and drew nine walks.
Bowman and Bouche ech had two hits for the Pirates.
