GREENVILLE — East Carolina used an 8-0 run in overtime to top Texas-San Antonio, 96-89, on Sunday in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
R.J. Felton had 22 of his 30 points in the first half as the Pirates improved to 16-12 overall and 8-7 in the American Athletic Conference.
“He kept us in the game,” said ECU coach Mike Schwartz on the Pirate radio network.
ECU overcame a 58-49 UTSA lead with 13:34 left to play. Regulation play ended in a tie at 82 as Jayshayne Woodard blocked a winning 3-point attempt by Marcus Millender with one second left.
Felton scored on a drive after a steal by Woodard to put the Pirates ahead to stay at 88-86 with 2:11 left in the extra period. That started the decisive flurry as Cam Hayes made two free throws, Jordan Riley had a lay-up and Woodard dunked with 38 seconds to go for a 94-86 advantage.
Felton made 10 of 15 field goal attempts, including all five of his tries from behind the arc, and five of seven at the line.
Riley had 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Cam Hayes added 16 points and four assists.
Trevion LaBeaux and Yann Farrel each had nine points for ECU.
C.J. Walker, who had 28 points and hit the game winner in an 80-79 win at UTSA on Feb. 8, was limited to seven points with foul trouble on Sunday.
Millender led the Roadrunners (10-17, 4-11 AAC) with 24 points.
The next game for the Pirates will be Sunday, March 2, at noon at home against Charlotte.
The two teams immediately ahead of ECU in the AAC standings lost on Sunday. A 78-67 setback at Wichita State dropped Tulane to 9-5 in league play. Florida Atlantic is 8-6 after an 84-65 defeat at No. 22 Memphis.
