NEW ORLEANS — Connor Rasmussen had a lackluster season as a freshman at East Carolina in 2023.
But the former Pirate got the game-winning RBI for Tulane on Sunday with a single that brought in Jackson Linn in the bottom of the 10th for a 10-9 American Athletic Conference win for the Green Wave, who completed a 3-game sweep of ECU.
Linn hit two home runs as the Pirates, who entered the series ranked No. 6 by D1 Baseball, lost their fifth straight.
Rasmussen saw action in 17 games last season with a batting average of .111. Since emerging from the transfer portal, he is hitting .317 in 51 games as a sophomore for Tulane (29-23, 13-11 AAC).
ECU (37-13, 16-8) finished the weekend with a one-game lead over second-place Texas San Antonio (29-21, 15-9) in the league standings.
The Pirates complete the regular season with a league series at home against Rice on Thursday through Saturday while UTSA goes to Florida Atlantic prior to the AAC Tournament in Clearwater, FL, beginning May 21.
ECU is scheduled to host Campbell (29-21) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Colin Tuft had a 3-run homer for the hosts in a 5-run second inning on Sunday. The Pirates tied the score at 6 with three runs in the fifth as Carter Cunningham hit a solo homer and Jacob Jenkins-Cowart launched a 2-run shot.
Ryan McCrystal had an RBI single and Jenkins-Cowart had a sacrifice fly as ECU took an 8-6 lead in the eighth.
Linn tied the score in the bottom of the eighth with a 2-run homer. Linn drew a walk from Jackson DiLorenzo (1-2) in the 10th and stole second before Rasmussen closed the contest on a 1-1 pitch.
ECU had a 12-11 lead in hits as McCrystal and Jenkins-Cowart had three each. Jenkins-Cowart had four RBIs. Cunningham and Joey Berini had two hits apiece.
Danny Beal saw the bulk of mound duty for the Pirates with six and one-third innings in relief. He allowed four hits and four runs (two earned) with no walks and five strikeouts.
