NEW ORLEANS — Matthias Haas hit two of Tulane’s three home runs in a 7-3 series-clinching American Athletic Conference win over No. 6 East Carolina on Saturday night.
Haas’ solo shot in the sixth broke a tie at 2 and put the Green Wave (28-23, 12-11 AAC) ahead to stay. Teo Banks had an RBI single in the sixth for a 4-2 lead.
ECU (37-12, 16-7) lost its fourth in a row but maintained a 2-game lead over second-place Texas San Antonio in the league standings.
The Pirates seek to avoid a sweep in a matchup on Sunday scheduled for 2 p.m.
Haas added a 2-run homer in the seventh for a 6-3 lead. Jackson Linn sent a blast over the center field fence to complete the scoring in the bottom of the eighth.
ECU coach Cliff Godwin was ejected in the middle of the eighth, apparently for a pitch clock call that went against Dixon Williams after a ball came on the field from the Pirate bullpen and Williams stepped out of the box.
RBI singles by Colin Tuft in the second and Gavin Schulz in the third gave the hosts a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates tied the score in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart and a run-scoring single to right by Ryan McCrystal.
Carter Cunningham and Jacob Starling each had two of ECU’s nine hits. Joey Berini had an RBI groundout in the seventh.
Aaron Grollier (2-2) was charged with the loss in relief.
Tulane starter Chandler Welch (6-3) went seven and one-third innings for the win.
