GREENVILLE — East Carolina was outshot in an 86-70 nonconference loss to visiting East Tennessee State on Friday night.
The Buccaneers made 28 of 59 field goal attempts for 47.5 percent, which included eight of 24 from beyond the arc for 33.3 percent.
ETSU was particularly accurate at the free throw line, hitting 22 of 23 for 95.7 percent.
The Pirates were almost even with the Bucs on the boards (40-39) and had fewer turnovers (14-17) but did not fare as well comparably in the shooting stats.
ECU went 22 of 63 overall from the floor (34.9 percent), including five of 30 on threes (16.7 percent) and 21 of 32 at the line (65.6 percent).
ETSU got 24 points from Jayden Seymour, 21 from Quimari Peterson and 14 from Karon Boyd. The trio all shot 50 percent or better from the field.
The Pirates were led by Brandon Johnson with 19 points and nine rebounds. R.J. Felton had 17 points and seven rebounds. Ezra Ausar contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Bobby Pettiford also had 12 points. Cam Hayes added eight points.
ECU was without Quintin Dboundje, who is averaging 7.9 points.
The Bucs broke a tie at 23 on a 3-pointer by Boyd with 6:55 left in the first half and led the rest of the way.
ETSU had its biggest advantage at 67-48 with 9:49 to go.
The Pirates (7-6) open American Athletic Conference play at No. 7 Florida Atlantic on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (ESPN2).
“We’re going to prepare for Florida Atlantic as if we had won this game or lost this game,” said ECU coach Mike Schwartz on the Pirate radio network. “We’re going to fix this game (Saturday) morning.”
