GREENVILLE — R.J. Felton didn’t miss his long locks, scoring 26 points for East Carolina on Wednesday night as the Pirates rolled to a 79-50 win over Delaware State in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
“I had to change it up,” Felton said of a haircut on the ECU radio network. “Coming into the new year, coming into conference play, I had to change it up.”
The Pirates were not seriously challenged in improving to 7-5 going into a holiday break. A three by Felton put ECU ahead to stay at 5-2 with 16:37 left in the first half.
The Pirates had their biggest lead at 77-47 with 52 seconds to go.
ECU made 16 of 24 field goal attempts in the second half for 66.7 percent. The Pirates also hit 66.7 percent from beyond the arc (4 for 6) over the last 20 minutes. The hosts knocked down 11 of 12 at the line for the game, including eight for eight after halftime.
Brandon Johnson had 13 points, 15 rebounds and four assists for ECU. Ezra Ausar added 10 points. Cam Hayes had nine points in his first start since transferring from LSU. Kansas transfer Bobby Pettiford had seven points and freshman Cyr Molonga netted six.
The Hornets (6-9) were led by 15 points from Wesley Oba.
The Pirates had a 42-33 rebounding advantage and committed fewer turnovers, 10-15.
ECU returns to action on Friday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m., at home against East Tennessee State (ESPN+).
