MEMPHIS — From a tie score at 32 with 15:59 to play, host Memphis pulled away for a 71-54 American Athletic Conference payback win over East Carolina on Thursday night.

Poor shooting plagued the Pirates, who were 19 for 72 on field goal attempts for 26.4 percent, including six for 29 from beyond the arc for 20.7 percent.

Tristen Newton led all scorers with 19 points for ECU but no other Pirates reached double figures.

Vance Jackson had nine points and 12 rebounds as the Pirates slipped to 11-8 overall and 2-5 in the AAC.

Memphis (11-8, 5-4) got 17 points from Lester Quinones. Josh Minott added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers.

ECU topped Memphis, 72-71, on Jan. 15 in Greenville.

The Pirates return home to take on Cincinnati (14-6, 4-3) on Sunday at noon.

ECU is 10-1 at home this season, 0-4 in away games and 1-3 on neutral courts.
