HOUSTON — East Carolina was limited to 16 percent field goal shooting as No. 10 Houston took a 79-36 American Athletic Conference win over the visiting Pirates on Saturday night.
Kyler Edwards had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as the Cougars improved to 17-2 overall and 6-0 in the AAC.
The Pirates (11-7, 2-4) were down, 44-14, at the half.
“Embarrassing,” said ECU coach Joe Dooley on the Pirate Radio Network. “Bad in all aspects. We’ve got to do a better job of preparing them.
“Most of that is attributable to Houston. I thought their defensive pressure had us discombobulated.”
The Pirates were led by 14 points and six rebounds from Tristen Newton, the only ECU player to score in double figures.
The Pirates stunned then-No. 5 Houston, 82-73, in their last meeting in Greenville on Feb. 3, 2021, and payback may have been part of the motivation for the Cougars, who won their ninth in a row and 36th straight at home.
ECU visits Memphis on Thursday for a 9 p.m. tipoff on ESPN2. The Tigers (9-8, 3-4) visit Tulsa on Sunday for a 3 p.m. start.
