CLEARWATER, FL — East Carolina was eliminated from the American Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday with a 12-5 loss to Wichita State at Spectrum Stadium.
The No. 7 Pirates (43-15) are expected to host a regional in the NCAA Tournament.
The Shockers (28-30) topped ECU for the second time in the AAC Tournament, taking a 5-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Jordan Boyer and a grand slam by Mason O’Brien.
ECU cut the margin to 5-1 in the top of the third on a solo home run by Turner Brown.
Wichita State extended its advantage to 11-1 in the third as O’Brien hit a 2-run homer.
Boyer had an RBI single in the fourth.
The Pirates scored three times in the seventh. Christian Jayne had an RBI double. Nick Barber and Chandler Jenkins had run-scoring hits.
ECU closed the scoring in the eighth with a single to left by Seth Caddell that brought in Thomas Francisco.
Barber, Jake Washer and Connor Norby had two hits each for the Pirates.
Jake Kuchmaner (6-2) was charged with the loss after yielding seven earned runs in two innings. The Pirates used eight pitchers. Evan Voliva, Garrett Saylor, Carter Spivey, Gavin Williams and Cam Colmore turned in scoreless relief stints for ECU.
Liam Eddy (5-8) pitched six and one-third innings for the Shockers. He allowed eight hits and three runs (all earned) while striking out seven without a walk.
