CLEARWATER, FL — East Carolina bounced back from an opening loss in the American Athletic Conference Tournament to defeat Houston 13-2 in an elimination game at Spectrum Stadium on Wednesday.
The No. 7 Pirates (43-14) began to take control in the top of the third inning with back-to-back home runs by Alec Burleson and Jake Washer that provided a 4-1 lead. Bryant Packard was hit by a pitch with one out before Burleson homered to right with two down.
Washer had another solo homer in the seventh after a 5-run sixth by the Pirates that included a 2-run single through the right side by Ryder Giles.
Bryson Worrell had a 2-run single in the ninth and Giles had a run-scoring hit.
Jake Agnos (9-1) started and went seven innings. He yielded four hits and one run (earned) while walking four and striking out seven. Cam Colmore pitched one-third on an inning before Zach Barnes finished up on the mound.
Washer went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Thomas Francisco was 3-for-3 with a double. Giles went 2-for-5 with three RBIs as ECU collected 15 hits.
The Pirates play again on Friday at 3 p.m. against the loser of Thursday’s matchup between Wichita State and Connecticut.
