GREENVILLE — A solo home run to left field by Brady Lloyd in the fifth inning started the scoring for East Carolina on Wednesday night and the Pirates went on to defeat Duke 6-1 at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Bryant Packard, Lane Hoover and Lloyd each had two hits and an RBI as No. 11 ECU improved to 22-6 overall with its 10th straight win.

The Pirates added two more runs in the fifth as Jake Washer scored on a wild pitch and Hoover had an RBI single that brought in Packard.

Washer, Nick Barber and Packard had RBIs in a 3-run sixth for ECU.

Duke (14-15) avoided a shutout in the ninth as Michael Rothenberg scored on a single to center by Kennie Taylor.

Taylor Benton (2-0) got the win in relief of starter Ryder Giles, who went three innings.

Benton pitched two and one-third innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three. Sam Lanier, Zach Barnes, Cam Colmore and Evan Odum turned in mound stints as Pirate pitchers recorded 12 strikeouts.
