GREENVILLE — Connecticut got 20 points and 10 rebounds from Josh Carlton in an 82-73 American Athletic Conference win at East Carolina on Sunday.
Carlton, a sophomore, played at nearby South Central before finishing his high school career at DeMatha in Washington, D.C.
The Pirates were within 64-62 on a layup by Jayden Gardner with 5:36 to go but the Huskies responded with a decisive 12-1 run.
Shawn Williams led ECU (10-20, 3-15 AAC) with 20 points. Senior Isaac Fleming had 18 points, six rebounds and 11 assists in his final game in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
The Pirates got 12 points from Dimitri Spasojevic, who played more with Seth LeDay out with a knee injury. Gardner totaled 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior Addison Hill had 10 points on 4-for-4 field goal shooting.
UConn (15-16, 6-12) had five players reach double figures in scoring, including Tyler Polley (19), Christian Vital (16), Jalen Adams (13) and Sidney Wilson (10). Adams had 12 assists.
The Pirates made eight of 15 from beyond the arc, 53.3 percent, but the Huskies offset that long-range accuracy by going 30 of 48 from the field, 62.5 percent.
ECU plays in the AAC Tournament on Thursday at approximately 10 p.m. against Wichita State (17-13, 10-8) at the FedEx Forum in Memphis.
