GREENVILLE — East Carolina trailed by 17 points in the first half before rallying for a six-point lead after intermission against Tulsa in a 77-73 American Athletic Conference overtime loss to the visiting Golden Hurricane on Sunday.
Shawn Williams hit eight of 14 shots from behind the arc and had 26 points as the Pirates were dealt their fifth straight loss.
ECU (9-16, 2-11 AAC) travels to Tulane for its next action on Saturday at 8 p.m. The Pirates got their last win over the Green Wave, 66-65, at home on Jan. 31.
Two free throws by Williams gave ECU a 73-72 lead with 1:11 left in the extra period.
Tulsa (16-10, 6-7) answered with a short jumper by Martins Igbanu with 58 seconds to go and led the rest of the way.
“We went toe-to-toe and had opportunities to win it,” said Pirates coach Joe Dooley. “We’re going to find a way. We just have to keep plugging away.”
Freshman Jayden Gardner had 19 points and 16 rebounds for ECU. Isaac Fleming had 13 points and four assists. Seth LeDay had eight points, K.J. Davis scored five and Tyler Foster added two.
Igbanu led the Golden Hurricane with 16 points and eight rebounds. Jeriah Horne had 12 points. Scoring 11 each were DaQuan Jeffries, Sterling Taplin and Elijah Joiner. Darien Smith tallied 10. Taplin had four assists.
