GREENVILLE — East Carolina overcame a 3-0 deficit to earn a 4-3 win over visiting Radford on Sunday and complete a three-game, season-opening sweep of the Highlanders.
An RBI single through the left side by Jake Washer broke a tie at 3 in the seventh inning, allowing pinch runner Christian Jayne to score.
Evan Voliva (1-0) got the win, striking out two in the top of the seventh with a runner in scoring position. Voliva fanned five over two and one-third innings.
Sam Lanier worked the last two innings for his first save of the season. Tyler Smith pitched the first four and two-thirds innings. Smith allowed four hits and three runs (two earned). He walked two and struck out three.
The Highlanders led 3-0 after three innings. A sacrifice fly by Washer in the fourth started ECU’s comeback. Bryson Worrell scored when Brady Lloyd reached on a fielder’s choice in a two-run sixth for the Pirates. The tying run came in when a ground out by Chandler Jenkins brought Spencer Brickhouse home.
Washer went 2-for-2 as No. 11 ECU had eight hits.
The Pirates visit Campbell (1-2) on Wednesday at 5 p.m., weather permitting.
