GREENVILLE — East Carolina outscored Lamar 13-7 in overtime for an 84-78 nonconference win in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Sunday.
The Pirates bounced back from a 73-72 home loss to James Madison on Friday night to improve to 2-1 as freshman Jayden Gardner had 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Virginia Tech transfer Seth LeDay had a tip-in with one second left in regulation to tie the score at 71 and bring on the extra period.
Gardner’s layup with 1:23 left in overtime put ECU ahead to stay at 80-78.
Gardner made nine of 10 field goal attempts for the game and had eight points in the extra period.
LeDay hit seven of nine from the floor in scoring 16 points and he also claimed nine rebounds.
The Pirates trailed 35-29 at the half after making just 11 of 29 field goal tries (37.9 percent) in the first 20 minutes. The hosts warmed up to drop 14 of 29 (48.3 percent) in the second half. ECU made three of four from the floor and seven of eight at the line in overtime.
Tyler Foster had 12 points in the win. K.J. Davis and Tae Hardy added 10 points each.
Josh Nzeakor and V.J. Holmes had 15 points each for the Cardinals. Mike Kolawole had 12 points, 12 rebounds four assists and three steals for Lamar (1-2).
The Pirates play Georgia Tech at the Thrillerdome in Atlanta on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets are 1-0 going into a matchup at Tennessee on Tuesday night. Georgia Tech topped Lamar 88-69 in its season opener at home on Friday.
