Texas-El Paso went on a
16-0 mid-second half run to break open a close game, then maintained
control the rest of the way to claim an 88-67 Conference USA victory
over East Carolina Saturday night in Greenville.
Sophomore guard Randy
Culpepper came off the bench to post a game-high 25 points and senior
guard Stefon Jackson added 19 points to pace the Miners, who exploded to
turn a 50-48 lead with 13:17 remaining into a 66-48 advantage a little
more than 3 minutes later.
Sophomore guard Julyan
Stone had 13 points and 7 assists for UTEP (11-6, 2-1 C-USA).
Sophomore guard Brock
Young scored 18 points and recorded 7 assists for the Pirates (9-7, 1-2
C-USA).
A significant disparity in
the turnover battle contributed to ECU's inability to develop sustained
momentum. The Miners committed only 9 miscues while the Pirates had 19
giveaways.
UTEP led at the half
41-36.
The Pirates continue their
challenging conference slate with a Wednesday night game at Houston,
which knocked off the Miners 94-86 in El Paso last Wednesday. The
Cougars (11-4, 2-1 C-USA) were victims of an 83-76 upset by Southern
Miss in Hattiesburg on Saturday.
