Pirates outlast Tulane in
league opener

East Carolina shot its way
to victory at the free throw line in its Conference USA opener, hitting
81.8% from the charity strip to fend off Tulane 69-66 Wednesday night in
Greenville.
The Pirates converted 27
of 33 free throw opportunities, including 8 of 10 after the Green Wave
wiped out a 12-point ECU lead late in the second half.
The win, which ended a
four-game losing streak for East Carolina, was the Pirates' first in a
C-USA opener since they
shocked No. 9 Marquette 73-70 in
Williams Arena on Dec. 30, 2002.
Senior guards James Legan
and Sam Hinnant led ECU's scoring efforts with 15 and 14 points,
respectively. Freshman forward Darrius Morrow grabbed a game-high 10
rebounds for the Pirates.
Senior forward Daniel
Puckett had a game-high 22 points, junior guard Eric Vianney scored 13
and junior foward Asim McQueen added 11 for the Green Wave.
Tulane (6-8, 0-1 C-USA) led at the half
33-31, but East Carolina (9-5, 1-0) surged to a 53-41 advantage over the
first 10 minutes of the final frame. Legan paced the run by making six
free throws and a pair of threes.
The Green Wave responded
with a spurt of its own to knot the game at 61 with 2:19 left, setting
the stage for East Carolina to squeak out the win with 4 successful free
throws by Brock Young and 2 apiece by Jamar Abrams and Hinnant.
The Pirates will try to
build some momentum in the conference when they challenge Marshall at
the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington on Saturday (3 p.m., CBSCS TV).
The Thundering herd is 7-7 (0-1 C-USA) after absorbing an 80-57 defeat
at Memphis Wednesday night.
