Half Empty or Half Full?

East Carolina, which will try to improve its record to 3-1 for only the second time since 2000, will also be looking to become the first Pirate squad to capture a victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference stadium since 2006 (21-16 at N.C. State). A win would end a run of seven-straight setbacks in ACC venues. After similar anemic second half offensive performances against their last opponents, both the Tar Heels and Pirates are looking to rebound from disheartening losses.

Against Virginia Tech, ECU fans were encouraged by an initial offensive scoring drive and the Pirate defense playing its best game of the year, limiting the Hokies to only 53 yards on the ground. But the purple partisans were equally disappointed with the lack of continuity on offense and a defense that consistently let the Hokies convert on third down (9-for-20), allowing Tech to own the time of possession battle by roughly 14 minutes. "(VPI defensive coordinator) Bud (Foster) has one of the top defenses in the country and you have to give him credit," ECU coach Ruffin McNeill said Monday. "We took what we learned from that game and worked on it. I like the way our staff fixes things. We'll bounce back and learn from it."

The North Carolina defense now has a blueprint on how to pressure Shane Carden, and it has an experienced secondary that will be needed to cover the stable of Pirate receivers. The Tar Heels shut down ECU last season, holding the Pirates to a season-low six points and just 233 yards. The key was getting to the quarterback the Heels had seven sacks, their most in a game since 2000, which resulted in a loss of 49 yards. We have to recreate that type of pressure, said North Carolina pass rusher Kareem Martin, who was one of eight Tar Heels who got to Carden last year. I think were going to be able to. After watching film, I see a lot of things I like.

But the Heels have offensive issues of their own. In 2012, UNC-CH averaged 40 points a game compared to just 23 in three games this season. While the Tar Heels have struggled on offense this season, senior quarterback Bryn Renner sees todays game as an opportunity to return to the offensive standard  set last season. Every time you step out, you get on a little roll, and I think thats what were going to try to do this weekend, Renner said at a press conference Monday. For us, its a confidence builder. How quickly are we going to respond?"

That is the same question Pirate fans are asking.

WORTH NOTING

ECU has received the opening kickoff in 14 straight games, the second-longest active streak nationally (18/San Diego State). Of those 14 possessions, the Pirates have cashed in five with TDs (2-of-11 in 12, 3-of-3 so far in 13).

East Carolina has allowed only 28 points in its last two games, the fewest in back-to-back contests since surrendering a combined 26 to Central Florida (10) and Marshall (16) during the 2008 campaign. On the other hand, in its last 15 games away from Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium (2010-12), ECU has
surrendered 563 points an average of nearly 37.5 points per game. The Tar Heels have scored 30 or more points in four of their last five games with the Pirates.

ECU has won 11 of the last 12 games (and 39 of 45) when scoring 30 or more points and has lost 12 straight when scoring 20 or less points. Last year, the six points the Pirates scored at North Carolina were their fewest in the series since a 56-0 loss in 1981.

Although they ranked 10th nationally in fewest penalties a year ago, the Pirates have been flagged a combined 20 times in the first three games (current rank of 83rd), which includes nine during the opener vs. Old Dominion.

Strength and conditioning coach Jeff Connors spent 10 seasons in a similar role at UNC-Chapel Hill from 2001-10. He returned to ECU, where he worked from 1990-2000, following the 2010 season. ECU Director of Operations/Player Personnel Brian Overton worked three seasons in Chapel Hill from 2009-11 as an operations assistant.

The Tar Heels will honor the military this afternoon by wearing a special white helmet with the American flag embedded in the
interlocking North Carolina logo on both sides of the headgear. A red stripe runs down the middle of the helmet, flanked by two blue stripes with stars. The Kenan Stadium playing surface will also have a special paint scheme.

ECU starting nose tackle Terry Williams has been suspended from the team indefinitely for violating team rules. Taking his place in the starting lineup this Saturday will be 6-4, 299-pound junior Chrishon Rose. Terry is a great player and a great athlete, so we have to step up, said Rose. He (Williams) told me to attack the quarterback. Thats what he wants me to do, and thats what Im going to do.

  FS Damon Magazu nearly
recorded his second double-digit tackle performance of the season with nine hits against the Hokies. He led all defenders with 11 stops vs. ODU in the opener. After booking personal bests with nine tackles apiece against Florida Atlantic, ILBs Brandon Williams and Zeek Bigger earned their first career starts against Virginia Tech and responded with 12 and 9 stops, respectively.

The North Carolina and East Carolina coaching staffs will be
wearing Coach to Cure MD
patches on the sidelines
Saturday to raise awareness
and funding for Duchenne
Muscular Dystrophy
research. Fans are encouraged
to donate at CoachtoCureMD.org or donate $5 by texting CURE to 90999.
