Senior forward Maurice Kemp scored a game-high 21 points and junior forward Robert Sampson had 14 points and 10 rebounds as East Carolina trounced Division III Methodist 87-51 Tuesday night in Greenville.

Kemp made 9 of 12 field attempts and 2 of 3 from the line to pace the Pirates offensively for the second straight game. He led all scorers with 19 points in ECU's 72-50 season-opening win over Washington & Lee on Saturday.

East Carolina outshot the Monarchs from the field 48.6 percent to 31.1 percent, but struggled from long range, converting only 4 of 26 (15.4 percent) 3-point tries.

Senior guard Shamarr Bowden helped ECU's cause with 9 assists.

Junior guard Akeem Richmond's 4 steals helped spark an intense defensive effort by the Pirates, who benefitted from 19 Methodist turnovers while giving up only 8 in return.

Junior forward Bryan Hockaday led the Monarchs with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

ECU, which led 36-24 at the half, didn't break the game open until the final 11 minutes of the second frame.

The Pirates return to action Friday night with a home game against UNC-Greensboro.
