Kemp, newcomers power Pirates in tip-off

Senior forward Maurice Kemp produced a game-high 19 points, 6-10 freshman forward Marshall Guilmette had 13 points and junior Rhode Island transfer Akeem Richmond recorded 10 points to help East Carolina beat Washington & Lee 72-50 Saturday night in Greenville in the season opener for both teams.


Kemp scored 15 points before intermission as the Pirates built a 35-22 halftime lead. ECU built on the margin over the course of the final frame, stretching its advantage to as much as 26 on two occasions.

Junior guard Kevin Gill had 12 points and senior forward J.D. Ey added 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Division III Generals.

The Pirates return to action Tuesday night with a home game against Division III Methodist.
