East Carolina has received commitments from two junior college offensive linemen who visited campus last weekend.

Joel Renaud, who is 6 feet 7 and 325 pounds, has three years of eligibility remaining after last playing in 2002 when he helped Reedley College in Reedley, Cal., to a 12-0 record and the national junior college championship.

Brian Smith (6-5, 325) helped Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss., to a 9-2 record and the state championship in 2002. The team slipped to 3-6 this season but Smith was selected to a Mississippi junior college all star game on Dec. 6 in Booneville.

Hes a big body with a lot of potential, said Reedley coach Mike White of Renaud.

Renaud, who is from Pompano Beach, Fla., had recruiting interest from Iowa and Iowa State. His campus visit sold him on the opportunity to contribute immediately for the Pirates.

The coaches were so real, Renaud said. I felt a good vibe. Im glad to be finished at Reedley. It was through the grace of God that I got through it. Ill be at ECU in the spring.

Holmes coach Hugh Shurden said of Smith, his best football is probably in front of him. He was a kid who needed a lot of honing to his skills. He got better. Hes a hard worker who can run block and pass block.

The junior college additions should help ECU offset considerable losses from a senior-laden offensive front.

The Pirates also must replace offensive line coach and assistant head coach J.B. Grimes, who left last week to become offensive line coach at Mississippi State.

Including tight end Willie Metcalf and defensive back Zack Baker, both from Pima College in Tucson, Ariz., ECU has four commitments from junior college players.
