A day after the
news was reported by Bonesville.net
and a number of other publications, Conference USA announced its athletic
directors had agreed to support the staging of an annual football
championship showdown.
The league's AD's, meeting in
Irving, TX, voted unanimously Thursday to recommend to the C-USA Board of
Directors that a title showdown be held starting in 2005.
The panel that will ultimately
say yea or nay on the issue consists of the presidents of the league's
schools.
The game would would pit the
champions from the East and West Divisions against one another at the
stadium of the team with the best winning percentage.
The net result of a major
reshuffling of its membership in 2005 will push C-USA to a membership of 12
all-sports schools, which meets the NCAA threshold for the minimum number of
football-playing members a conference must have in order to sponsor a
championship game in that sport.
Six schools will enter the
league in 2005, while five will embark for other destinations.
The entrance into C-USA of
Central Florida and Marshall currently members of the Mid-American
Conference and Rice, SMU, Tulsa and UTEP presently in the Western
Athletic Conference, will coincide with the departures of Cincinnati,
Louisville, South Florida, Texas Christian and Army.
The Bearcats, Cardinals and
Bulls are set to join the Big East in 2005. At that same time, the Horned
Frogs will move to the Mountain West Conference and the Black Knights will
revert to the independent ranks.
If the league's board of
directors gives final approval to the recommendation from the AD's, C-USA
will become one of five Division I-A conferences that hold a football
championship game. The Southeastern, Big 12 and Mid-American conferences
currently stage football championship games, and
the ACC has picked Jacksonville, FL, to
host its inaugural title game in 2005.
