Lady Pirates advance to regional final

The East Carolina softball team bounced back from a
afternoon loss to No.11 national seed Baylor to knock off host Maryland for
the second time in two days on Saturday to secure a shot on Sunday at the
College Park Regional championship.
In the day's first game, ECU senior pitcher Toni Paisley gave up
only three singles and a walk and fanned nine, but Baylor scored an unearned
run in the first and added a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to claim a
2-0 victory and move into the title round of the double-elimination event as
the only unbeaten team.
Baylor sophomore Whitney Canion (40-21) whiffed six and gave up only two
hits and a walk.
In the evening survival matchup, Paisley (32-11) got the win over the Lady
Terrapins for the second straight day, surrendering eight hits and a walk
but keeping Maryland off the scoreboard.
The Lady Pirates scored an unearned run in the first and on a sixth inning
RBI groundout by freshman Kristi Oshiro to prevail 2-0.
Maryland junior Kendra Knight (10-6) gave up nine hits and a walk in taking
the the loss.
The previous day, Paisley pitched ECU to
a 5-1
win over the Lady Terrapins.
East Carolina will challenge Baylor again on Sunday at
noon. An ECU win sets up a winner-take-all title showdown at 2 p.m. |
