First-inning, base-clearing home runs by freshmen Jordan
Lewis and Jasmine Robbins gave pitcher Toni Paisley all the margin she
needed and more as East Carolina dealt a 5-1 defeat to host Maryland in the
opening round of the NCAA Softball Championship's College Park Regional on
Friday night.
Jordan's round-tripper, her fourth of the season, came
after freshman and leadoff batter Jill Jelnick reached on a walk and
freshman Kristi Oshiro singled. Following Jordan's blast, junior Priscilla
Velasquez walked, setting up Robbins to clear the bases again with her
second home run of 2011.
After the first inning outburst, the Lady Pirates'
offense was handcuffed for the night, but it didn't matter with Paisley on
the mound. The senior ace (31-11) hurled a methodical five hitter, giving up
only an unearned run in the bottom of the first before settling in to bottle
up the Lady Terrapins the rest of the way.
Maryland starter Kerry Hickey (18-10) was relieved after
the first inning by Kendra Knight, who gave up only one hit over the final
six innings.
No. 11 national seed and regional favorite Baylor shut
out Lehigh 4-0 in the regional's other opening-day game.
The double-elimination format pits East Carolina against
Baylor on Saturday at noon, followed by Maryland and Lehigh each fighting to
eliminate the other at 2:30 p.m.
The survivor of the Maryland-Lehigh matchup will square
off against the ECU-Baylor loser at 5 p.m., with the winner of the game
advancing to Sunday's championship round.
