Detour through Athens, GA, leads Bryant to ECU

Two more Georgia football recruits will not enroll this fall as the attrition from Coach Mark Richt's highly touted recruiting class continues.

Jamar Bryant and Corey Moon are the fifth and sixth of Richt's 19 signees to be scratched from the Bulldogs' anticipated active roster for academic or injury reasons.

One of the newcomers, safety Antavious Coates, injured a knee last month and will be sidelined for the entire season.

In the case of Bryant, Georgia's loss will be East Carolina's gain. The SuperPrep All-American, who starred for ECU Hall of Famer Ed Emory at Richmond Senior High, failed to qualify for admission to Georgia in 2004 and spent the last year at Hargrave.

With his academic situation still unresolved a month before fall camp begins, the Hamlet native decided to join the Pirates.

``Jamar Bryant has asked for and received release from his letter of intent with the University of Georgia. He has decided he wants to go to East Carolina University, which is closer to his home,'' Richt said.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Bryant, who starred on both sides of the ball at Hargrave, had been expected to play defensive back for Georgia, Hargrave coach Robert Prunty said.

Moon, a defensive end from Decatur, GA, said he did not score high enough on the SAT and will enroll at Virginia's Hargrave Military Academy.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Moon had 14 sacks as a prep senior. He said his SAT was 50 points under the 1010 he needed to go with a GPA of 2.0.

BCS bowls hopping on video replay bandwagon

Bowl Championship Series officials want instant replay used in all bowl games starting this season, and are confident it can be done.

``The commissioners are looking at the possibility of having video replay, at a minimum, available for the national title game and optimistically for all bowl games,'' BCS spokesman Bob Burda said Wednesday.

The Rose Bowl will host the national title game Jan. 4.

The Big Ten became the first conference to use video review of football game officials' calls last season, with an official in the press box determining if a play would be reviewed and overturning the call if replay showed conclusively it was wrong.

The NCAA gave all Division I-A conferences to opportunity to experiment with replay this season, and nine of 11 have adopted the Big Ten's system or some variation.

Conference USA is planning to implement video replay procedures that would leave the final call on each reviewed play in the hands of the referee on the field.

The Mountain West Conference's replay system will incorporate a coaches' challenge, similar to the NFL's system. The Big 12 will allow on-field officials to assist the replay official in the press box.

The Western Athletic Conference and Sun Belt will not use replay this season.

``The use of replay for the majority of leagues is predicated on games being televised,'' Burda said. ``In the postseason, that ingredient is already included in the mix.''

The main obstacle to overcome is deciding what system would be used in a bowl game involving teams from two different conferences and an officiating crew from a third league.

``They have to work out the logistics,'' Burda said.

But he said the conference commissioners are ``optimistic they can get it worked out.''
