Rice diamond stars make U.S. national team
Thanks to Rice's official entry into
Conference USA on July 1, the league will be represented on the USA Baseball
National Team this summer.
After a four-day tryout period, Owls
Josh Rodriguez and Joe Savery were selected to the 22-man United States
national team for its up-coming five week national and international tour,
USA Baseball announced from its headquarters in Durham last Friday.
The team, which consists of the top
collegiate baseball players in the country, includes no other C-USA players
on its rosters.
Team USA's summer schedule includes
games against the national teams of Japan, Taiwan, Nicaragua and Italy. The
team will also face selected collegiate summer league teams across the U.S.
to round out a five-week summer tour.
It didn't take Rodriguez long to start
making a positive impact on Team USA's won-loss ledger. The sophomore from
Houston led off the top of the ninth with a home run to straight-away
centerfield Monday night, giving the squad a 7-6 victory over the Newport
Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Team USA returns to action Thursday at
10 p.m. EDT in the first game of the 34th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate
Championship Series. Thursday's game will be played at the Osaka Dome.
The Rice duo were invited to try out
for Team USA along with 37 other college players from across the country.
The national team selections were finalized Friday after a four-day tryout
camp held in Raleigh on the campus of N.C. State.
Only the University of Florida (three)
had more players than Rice selected to the national team. A complete list of
the 22-man roster can be viewed at USA Baseball's official web site at
usabaseball.com.
Savery, a pitcher/first baseman from
Houston's Lamar High School, was selected as the 2005 national Freshman of
the Year by Baseball America on June 29.
Rodriguez, a sophomore shortstop/second
baseman from South Houston High School, was a 2005 third team all-America
selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Rice Athletics release.
