Spider assistants follow Wainwright to DePaul

Former Richmond and UNC-Wilmington basketball coach Jerry Wainwright, named last month to take the reigns of the program at DePaul, has announced the hiring of a pair of his former Spider aides.

Ramon Williams and Scott Wainwright join the Blue Demons after spending the past three seasons on Wainwright’s staff at Richmond, a span during which the Spiders compiled 50 wins and earned bids in the 2004 NCAA Tournament and the 2003 NIT.

A native of Roanoke, Va., Williams served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, VMI, for nine seasons before moving to Richmond in 2002. Promoted to VMI’s associate head coach in 1999, Williams oversaw the Keydets’ basketball operations that included facilities, scouting and recruiting. Prior to working at VMI, Williams spent one season as an assistant coach in the high school ranks.

In his playing days with the Keydets, Williams earned All-Southern Conference honors in both 1989 and 1990 and was named to the league’s All-Tournament team in 1988 and 1990. He finished his career as the Keydets third all-time leading scorer with 1,630 points.

Wainwright, a UNC-Wilmington graduate and the youngest son of DePaul's new head coach, was responsible for the Spiders’ team travel and several other duties.

Before coming to Richmond, Wainwright served as the Director of Athletics and head basketball coach at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC. He was named Eastern Carolina Community College Athletic Conference (ECCCAC) Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2001 while directing the Sea Devils to back-to-back league championships.
