ECU names Lee to basketball
position
East Carolina basketball coach Bill
Herrion has turned to the son of an ECU alum and former Pirate assistant to
fill a staff position.
Brooks Lee has been named Director of
Basketball Operations, Herrion announced Thursday. The son of former
Campbell coach Billy Lee, Brooks Lee is entering his second season as a
college basketball coach after serving as an assistant coach at Wofford last
season.
“We’re very happy to add Brooks to our
staff,” said Herrion in a statement. “As the son of a coach, he’s been
around the game his entire life and possesses a lot of knowledge about it.
He is a good young coach and we’re excited about having him become a part of
our program.”
Brooks Lee, whose father earned a
Masters at ECU while serving as an assistant coach at the school from
1976-78, indicated he views his new position as an opportunity to gain
valuable experience.
“I have a lot of respect for Coach
Herrion and I’m very excited about the opportunity that he’s given me,”
Brooks Lee stated in the ECU press release. “The chance to learn under him
and broaden my knowledge of the game is a tremendous opportunity. I’m
looking forward to being a part of Pirate basketball.”
His duties will include film exchange,
team travel and coordinating the Bill Herrion Basketball Camp.
Lee graduated from Campbell in 2002
with a degree in sport management and completed work on his Master’s degree
in exercise science. He averaged 9.7 points and 4.3 assists while starting
all 26 games for the Camels his last season. He was named to the Atlantic
Sun All-Academic team and placed second in the A-Sun with his team-best 87.9
free-throw percentage. At one point, he made 24 consecutive attempts at the
charity stripe.
In just two seasons at Campbell, after
transferring from High Point, Lee placed sixth on the Camels’ career list
for assists with 254. He was also second in career average (4.8) while
placing seventh for all-time three-point field-goal percentage (39.3).
In the 2001-02 campaign, Lee topped the
Atlantic Sun in assists at 5.2 per contest. He started all 53 games over his
final two seasons in Buies Creek.
