Conference USA posted three more victories
over schools from Bowl Championship Series conferences, giving the league
six wins over BCS league teams in the first three weeks of 2003.
That is more wins against BCS conference
teams than C-USA had during all of the 2002 season.
Cincinnati won at West Virginia and
Louisville won at Syracuse on Saturday afternoon, giving C-USA two victories
against the Big East.
On Saturday evening, Tulane erased a
14-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Mississippi State 31-28 and give
C-USA its third win vs. the SEC in four meetings this season.
Stefan LeFors passed for 266 yards and
three touchdowns, while Eric Shelton rushed for 135 yards to lead Louisville
to a 30-20 victory at Syracuse. The Cardinals are 2-0 and have opened the
seson with back-to-back road victories for the first time since 1995.
Cincinnati also moved to 2-0 with a road
victory over a Big East team, winning at West Virginia, 15-13. The Bearcats
held the Mountaineers to 118 rushing yards, less than half of their season
average.
J.P. Losman recorded his second straight
300-yard passing game, going 30-of-48 for 348 yards and tossing four TD
passes for the second straight week as Tulane posted its first win over an
SEC team since 1989. Also in that game, RB Mewelde Moore became Conference
USA's all-time leadeing rusher.
C-USA picked up another victory outside the
conference as Houston moved to 2-1 with a 21-14 win at Louisiana-Lafayette.
Jackie Battle ran for two touchdowns and Brandon Middleton caught five
passes for 129 yards to lead the Cougars.
In a C-USA game, Southern Mississippi
defeated Memphis 23-6. It was the Golden Eagles' second straight win since a
season-opening loss against PAC-10 opponent California.
In other games involving league teams:
Miami of the Big East exploded for 21
4th-quarter points to thump East Carolina 38-3.
Rutgers of the Big East outscored Army
36-21.
 Independent Troy State surprised UAB
20-9.
