East Carolina will be without one of its
frontline soldiers when it marches into Army's Michie Stadium for a game
between winless teams.
ECU head coach John Thompson has suspended
sophomore defensive back Antonie Nealy, according to a Wednesday news
release issued by the school's athletic department.
Nealy, who has started all six games at
free safety this season for the Pirates, has been suspended indefinitely for
a violation of team rules, said the news release, which noted that he is
expected to be replaced in the starting lineup by senior Richard Moton.
Nealy, a product of South Columbus High
School, has accounted for 35 tackles this season, including a career-high 11
against Wake Forest, and has had two pass breakups. He is the younger
brother of current ECU starting linebacker Kent Nealy.
The Pirates will play the Black Knights in
a Conference USA game on Saturday at 1 p.m. in West Point, NY.
Thursday TV capsule: N.C. State vs. Clemson
ESPN, 7:30 p.m. — Clemson (4-2) at N.C.
State (4-3).
Opening Line: N.C. State by 7.
Series Record: Clemson leads, 44-26-1.
Last Meeting: 2002, N.C. State 38-6.
WHAT TO WATCH: Clemson should be motivated
for this game after last season's embarrassment on national TV. The Tigers
are coming off an emotional 30-27 overtime win last week against Virginia.
If Clemson can shut down the Wolfpack's passing game, they'll have a chance.
QB Philip Rivers directs the nation's second-most prolific passing offense -
the Wolfpack's 2,409 yards passing are second only to Texas Tech. Lack of a
running game and defense has hurt them. The Wolfpack needed Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay's
56-yard interception return with five seconds to beat Connecticut 31-24 last
week. N.C. State RB T.A. McLendon, hampered by a hamstring injury, only had
12 carries last week. Backup RB Josh Brown is questionable with a hip
flexor. The Wolfpack's largely ineffective defense will also be without DE
Renaldo Moses (torn ligaments) and CB-KR Lamont Reid (separated shoulder).
Clemson QB Charlie Whitehurst has thrown 12 TD passes this season, and has
completed 62 percent of his passes. RB Yusef Kelly ran for 88 yards in his
first start of the season last week, helping Clemson to its biggest game on
the ground all season.
STREAKS, STATS AND NOTES: This meeting is
the 23rd Textile Bowl - the teams have met 71 times, but it has only been
known as the Textile Bowl since 1981, the year Clemson won the national
title. ... Clemson has won three of the past four meetings in Raleigh. ...
Rivers has thrown for 2,326 yards, second only to B.J. Symons of Texas Tech,
who has 2,954 yards passing.
Billikens get blessing for on-campus arena
The Saint Louis University board of
trustees has approved the construction of a new University arena contingent
upon raising an estimated $45 million in private donations. The arena would
be built in Midtown St. Louis, where SLU's campus is located.
The new 12 to 13-thousand-seat arena will
function as a true multi-purpose campus events center, hosting a myriad of
SLU events, including men's and women's basketball, commencement, cultural
events, conferences and conventions.
Renderings of the new facility can be
viewed on the Internet at arena.slu.edu.
U of L dives into natatorium construction project
LOUISVILLE — University of Louisville
officials and students made the first big splash during a groundbreaking
ceremony for the Ralph Wright Natatorium on Wednesday.
Named for the man who established the U of
L swimming program, the 41,000-square-foot natatorium will serve as home to
the Cardinal swim teams. The $10.5 million facility also will be open to all
U of L students.
The Ralph Wright Natatorium is expected to
open in Spring 2005
