Senior forward Cameron
Moore, a 6-10, 230-lb. force in the paint, scored 21 points and grabbed
14 rebounds to help UAB gain a season split with East Carolina with a
hard-fought 61-57 Conference USA victory over the Pirates on Saturday in
Greenville.
The triumph was the UAB's
sixth in seven games, establishing unmistakable momentum as the Blazers
(13-14, 8-6 C-USA) point to regular-season-ending league challenges this
week with Tulsa and Central Florida as steps to breaking the .500 mark
in overall wins heading into the Conference USA Tournament.
Conversely, the loss was
East Carolina's fifth in a row and casts the Pirates' remaining matchups
as chances to build some much-needed confidence.
The Blazers managed a
31-28 halftime advantage and seized the impetus at the start of the
second frame with a 6-0 surge in little over a minute. The mini-run was
capped by a pair of inside baskets by Moore.
UAB achieved its biggest
lead of the second half at 47-37 on a dunk by Moore off a turnover with
13:24 left. But each time the Blazers threatened to pull away, East
Carolina responded with a spurt of its own.
The Blazers seemed in
control with a 59-50 advantage at the 5:50 mark when the Pirates made
their final charge. Junior guard Shamarr Bowden made a pair of jump
shots, including a three, and senior forward Darrius Morrow scored a
basket in close to pull East Carolina within two with 2:08 left.
But the Pirates went cold
at crunch time, missing four 3-point attempts as the clock wound down.
UAB sophomore guard
Preston Purifoy made a pair of free throws with 11 ticks remaining to
wrap up the win and extract a bit of payback for
the
Blazers 73-66 loss to East Carolina in Birmingham on Jan.
28.
Bowden connected on 10 of
15 shots — including 7-of-11 3-point attempts — and scored a game-high
and career-high 27 points to pace the Pirates, who got 10 points apiece
from Morrow and sophomore forward Robert Sampson.
Purifoy joined Moore in
double figures for the Blazers with 15 points.
East Carolina closes its
home slate with a 7 p.m. contest against Marshall on Wednesday (TV: WITN).
The Pirates conclude the regular season with a trip to Tulane for an 8
p.m. tipoff on Saturday.
