East Carolina swapped leads with Southern Miss for more than three-quarters of the game before the Golden Eagles mounted a final push and spoiled what turned out to be Mack McCarthy's final appearance as head coach in Williams Arena.

The Pirates (10-20, 4-12 Conference USA) led 33-32 at the half and appeared positioned to make a bid for the upset until Southern Miss (18-12, 8-8) took a 55-54 lead on a pair of free throws by Sai'Quon Stone with 6:52 left and then maintained control the rest of the way to claim a 75-65 league victory Saturday night.

The game closed out the regular season for both teams.

McCarthy, ECU's skipper for three seasons, announced after the game that he will relinquish his head coaching duties after this week's C-USA Tournament to move into a role aimed at helping the program secure an on-campus practice facility.

R.L. Horton's 14 points was tops among a quintet of USM players in double figures. Angelo Johnson and Gary Flowers each had 13, Stone added 12 and Torye Pelham contributed 10 for the Golden Eagles.

Junior guard Brock Young scored 15 points, sophomore forward Darrius Morrow recorded 13 and sophomore guard Daquan Joyner added 10 for the Pirates.

The 10th-seeded Pirates will face No. 7 seed Houston in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament on Wednesday at the BOK Center in Tulsa. The top four teams in the 12-team league — Texas-El Paso, Memphis, UAB and Marshall — will have first round byes.
