Young fuels road win over

After swapping leads and
ties for most of the first half, junior guard Brock Young's jumper at
the 1:31 mark gave East Carolina the advantage for good in a 76-65
Conference USA victory over Rice Saturday afternoon in Houston.
Young went on to produce a
career-high 27 points to lead the Pirates (9-17, 3-9 C-USA) to a season
split with the Owls (8-18, 1-11 C-USA). Rice
won a
Jan. 30 matchup between the teams in Greenville.
Junior guard Jontae
Sherrod scored 15 points and junior forward Jamar Abrams added 13 points
for East Carolina.
Sophomore forward Darrius
Morrow and freshman guard Erin Straughn each grabbed 9 rebounds to help
the Pirates win the battle of the boards 40-35.
Freshman guard Tamir
Jackson had 22 points and sophomore forward Lucas Kuipers added 14
points for the Owls.
East Carolina led 30-24 at
the half and responded in the final frame to a series of Rice surges with spurts of its own.
The outcome demonstrated
the Pirates' resilience and the effectiveness of their preparations
during a break in the schedule since
their
100-76 rout by Texas-El Paso a week earlier.
East Carolina will try to
put together back-to-back conference wins for the first time this season
when it hosts Southern Methodist (12-14, 5-7 C-USA) in a
nationally-televised game Wednesday night (7 p.m., CBS Sports).
The Mustangs, with former
North Carolina coach Matt Doherty at the helm, are coming off a 76-63
loss at Memphis Saturday night.
