East Carolina comeback
falters

East Carolina almost dug
itself out of a deep hole with a 26-10 surge to start the second half
before Rice wrested back the momentum and claimed a 69-58 Conference USA
victory Saturday night in Greenville.
After trailing at the half
41-23, the Pirates (7-14, 1-6 C-USA) dominated the first 12 minutes of
the second frame, pulling within 51-49 on a layup by junior forward
Jamar Abrams with 8:23 remaining.
That's when the rally
ended as freshman guard Tamir Jackson's 3-pointer at the 8:01 mark
shifted the impetus back to the Owls (7-13, 1-6) who held on for their
first conference win of the season and snapped a seven-game losing
streak.
The Pirates remained
within striking distance most of the rest of the way, cutting the
deficit to three on two occasions — the final time on a 3-pointer by
freshman guard Erin Straughn with 1:34 left.
Trey Stanton, a 6-10
junior center, answered from behind the arc at the other end of the
court 25 seconds later and Rice's lead was secure from that point on.
Sophomore forward Darrius
Morrow had a game-high 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and
junior guard Brock Young added 14 points for East Carolina.
Jackson and Stanton scored
18 points apiece, freshman forward Arsalan Kazemi recorded 14 points and
a game-high 14 rebounds and sophomore forward Lucas Kuipers contributed
10 points for Rice.
The Pirates
play their second straight home game Tuesday when they host league foe
Central Florida at 7 p.m.
