Pirates fight off Tulane

East Carolina countered a
second half Tulane comeback with a rally of its own in the final 3
minutes to claim a 71-68 Conference USA victory Wednesday night in
Greenville.
Junior guard Brock Young
had 16 points and 9 assists to help the Pirates (8-16, 2-8 C-USA) snap a
three-game skid by completing a season sweep of the Green Wave (7-16,
2-8 C-USA).
East Carolina's last win
and its only other league victory
came over Tulane 61-46 on Jan. 24 in New Orleans.
Junior forward Jamar
Abrams scored 16 points and sophomore forward Darrius Morrow and junior
guard Jontae Sherrod each recorded 11 points for the Pirates.
Freshman guard Kendall
Timmons came off the bench to score 16 points, junior guard Aaron Holmes
had 15, junior forward David Booker added 12 and senior reserve forward
Asim McQueen contributed 10 for Tulane.
The Green Wave overcame a
10-point halftime deficit and took a 63-62 lead on a jumper by freshman
guard Jordan Callahan with 4:28 left.
Sherrod pushed East
Carolina temporarily back into the lead with a pair of free throws 30
seconds later, but Booker responded with a three-point play off a layup
with 3:39 remaining to give Tulane a 66-64 advantage.
That was the cue for the
Pirates to outscore the Wave 7-2 as the clock wound down. Young scored
the final 4 points on a jumper at the 1:23 mark and a clinching pair of
free throws with 9 seconds left.
The Pirates face a
daunting challenge Saturday (9:05 p.m.) when they meet Texas-El
Paso in the Don Haskins Center in El Paso. The Miners (18-5, 9-1 C-USA)
are in first place in the conference after a 62-51 win over Southern
Methodist Wednesday night in Dallas.
