After sitting out three
games with a suspension, sophomore forward Darrius Morrow came off the
bench to score 17 points and help East Carolina secure a 61-46
Conference USA victory over Tulane Sunday afternoon in New Orleans.
Junior forward Jamar
Abrams and freshman guard Erin Straughn each made a conventional basket
and a three-pointer in the first five minutes to pace the Pirates (7-13,
1-5 C-USA) to a 12-0 lead out of the gates.
Abrams finished with 11
points and Straughn and junior center Chad Wynn added 8 apiece for East
Carolina, which snapped a five-game losing streak and picked up its
first conference win since
a 91-88 overtime triumph over
Rice last Feb. 14 in Greenville.
Freshman guard Kendall
Timmons scored 15 points and junior guard Kris Richard had 14 for
Tulane, which trailed from start to finish.
The Green Wave (6-12, 1-4
C-USA) made only 16-66 (24.2 percent) from the field, including a
miserable 1-18 (5.6 percent) from behind the arc.
East Carolina was 25-54
(46.3 percent) on its field goal attempts and converted 3-15 (20
percent) of its 3-point tries.
The Pirates led 32-21 at
the half.
Morrow and freshman guard
Wakefield Ellison were suspended on Jan. 13 by East Carolina coach Mack
McCarthy for a violation of team rules.
The Pirates
have a gap in their weekday schedule before returning to action on
Saturday in a league matchup at home against Rice (7 p.m.)
