Marshall ended its
five-game losing streak by thrashing East Carolina in almost every facet
of the game for a 100-49 Conference USA victory Saturday night in
Huntington, WV.
Junior forward Tirrell
Baines scored 18 points, senior forward Tyler Wilkerson had 17 points
and senior guard Chris Lutz and freshman forward Hassan Whiteside added
15 apiece to help the Thundering Herd (16-7, 5-4 C-USA) capture its
first win since prevailing over Tulane 89-79 on Jan. 16.
Junior guard Brock Young
and sophomore forward Darrius Morrow each recorded 11 points for East
Carolina (7-16, 1-8 C-USA), which lost its third straight game and and
eighth in its last nine games.
Marshall led at the half
33-21 and took advantage of miscues and frigid shooting by the Pirates
to steadily expand the margin to rout proportions in the second half.

The Herd outshot East
Carolina from the field 55.9 percent to 25 percent and from
three-point range 50.0 percent to 7.1 percent.

The Pirates committed
22 turnovers, while Marshall had only 7 giveaways.

assists while limiting East Carolina to 4.

The 51-point margin of
loss was East Carolina's worst conference defeat since
a 92-41 thumping by then-league
member and 14th-ranked Louisville on Jan. 19, 2005.
East Carolina returned to
Greenville after the game and will try to regain its footing before a
Wednesday night home contest with C-USA foe Tulane.
Since completing their
non-conference schedule with a win over North Carolina Central on Jan.
3, the Pirates' only victory in nine outings
came against the Green Wave in New Orleans on Jan. 24.
