Senior guard James Legan
scored 26 points and five of his teammates produced double-figure
scoring to pace East Carolina in a 99-85 victory over UNC-Wilmington
Wednesday night in Wilmington.
Sophomore wing Jamar
Abrams scored 18 points, freshman forward Darrius Morrow added 16,
senior guard Sam Hinnant had 13 and sophomore center Chad Wynn and
sophomore guard Brock Young scored 10 apiece as the Pirates won in Trask
Coliseum for the first time since 1992.
Legan was 9 of 16 from the
floor and tied a school record with 8 three-pointers. As a team, East
Carolina made 35-65 (53.8%) of its field goal attempts, including 14 of
37 from behind the arc (37.8%).
Young recorded a
career-high 12 assists and Morrow had a game-high 9 rebounds for ECU.
Sophomore guard Chad Tomko
scored a game-high 29 points, sophomore forward Dominque Lacy added 22
and junior guard Johnny Wolf had 19 for UNCW.
The Pirates, who committed
only 6 turnover while forcing 13 from their rivals, quickly padded a
52-48 halftime lead with an 8-0 run to start the final frame and
remained in command the rest of the way.
East Carolina improved to
6-1 on the season, its best start since the 2003-04 season, while the
Seahawks fell to 3-5.
The Pirates return home
Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup with Division II Limestone. The Saints
come into the game 2-2 after a Tuesday night loss at Anderson.
