Houston smacks Pirates

Houston bolted to a
double-digit lead within minutes after tip-off and maintained control
the rest of the way to capture an easy 85-67 Conference USA victory over
East Carolina Wednesday night at Hofheinz Pavilion on the UH campus.
Junior guard Aubrey
Coleman scored 23 points and four of his teammates contributed
double figure scoring to help the Cougars build a 51-31 halftime lead
and fend off any serious threat from the Pirates in the second half.
Senior center Marcus
Cousin scored 18 points and junior guard Kelvin Lewis had 16 points,
while junior forward Qa'rraan Calhoun and senior guard DaShaun Williams
added 12 points apiece for Houston (12-4, 3-1 C-USA).
Cousin and Calhoun
completed double doubles by hauling in 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Senior guard Sam Hinnant
scored 22 points, freshman forward Darrius Morrow had 12 points and
sophomore forward Jamar Abrams recorded 10 points and 9 rebounds for
East Carolina (9-8, 1-3).
The Pirates led 10-7 less
than four minutes after the game's start when the Cougars went on a 26-8
run to build a 15-point lead, 33-18, with 7:21 left in the half. East
Carolina never whittled its deficit to single digits after that point.
After starting the season
8-1, the Pirates have lost seven of their last eight. Three of the
losses were to Atlantic Coast Conference teams and three were to C-USA
foes.
The Pirates make the
second stop on their Texas swing Saturday when they face Southern
Methodist in Dallas (5 p.m., CBSCSN). The
Mustangs (6-10, 1-3) lost a 53-50 heartbreaker at Marshall Wednesday
night thanks to a 75-foot bank shot by Herd forward Markel Humphrey as
time expired.
