Any hopes East Carolina had of finally advancing past the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament faded away in the long shadow cast over the court at the FedEx Forum by Tulsa seven-footer Jerome Jordan.

A sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica, Jordan scored 18 points and dominated the action around the basket with 14 rebounds and 8 blocked shots as the 7th-seeded Golden Hurricane soundly defeated the 10th-seeded Pirates 66-49 Wednesday in the 2008 tournament's first game.

Jordan's dominating performance in the middle helped Tulsa control the rebounding battle 46-29 and hold the Pirates to 28 percent shooting.

Sophomore guard Ben Uzoh scored 15 points for the Golden Hurricane.

Senior guard Cory Farmer had 15 points and sophomore forward Gabe Blair added 10 points and 9 rebounds for East Carolina.

The game's outcome extended the Pirates' perfect record of futility in the conference's climactic event. Since entering the league in 2001-02, East Carolina has not won a tournament game.

Tulsa advanced to a quarterfinal matchup today at 1:00 p.m. (TV: CSS) against No. 2 seed UAB. The Blazers, top seed Memphis, No. 3 Houston and 4th-seeded Central Florida had byes on the tourney's first day.

In other C-USA Tournament action:

--- No. 6 Texas-El Paso routed No. 11 Southern Methodist 77-49 and will face Houston at 3:30 p.m. (TV: CSS).

--- In a mild upset, No. 9 Tulane nipped No. 8 Marshall 48-47 and will face host Memphis at 7 p.m. (TV: CSTV and CSS).

--- No. 5 Southern Mississippi defeated bottom seed Rice 59-50 and will challenge UCF at 9:30 p.m. (CSS).
