Forward Tyler Wilkerson
was an unstoppable force offensively and on the boards to lead Marshall
to a dominating 83-49 win over East Carolina Saturday
in Huntington, WV.
Wilkerson, a brawny 6-8
sophomore, scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed a game-high 7
rebounds as Marshall extracted a full measure of payback for the
Pirates'
75-62 victory over the
Thundering Herd in Greenville on Jan. 16.
Markel Humphrey added 15
points, Tirrell Baines scored 14 and Mark Dorris had 10 points for
Marshall, which improved to 12-10 overall, 4-5 in Conference USA.
Wilkerson made 12 of 13
field goal attempts, including a 9 of 10 performance during the first
half that helped the Herd forge a commanding a 36-25 lead.
Marshall outscored the
Pirates 23-10 over the first 9:16 of the second half to turn the contest
into a rout.
No player scored in double
figures for East Carolina, which fell to 8-13, 2-6 in the league. Senior
guard Cory Farmer led the Pirates with 9 points.
East Carolina junior guard
Sam Hinnant, who poured in 24 points in the earlier meeting
between the teams, attempted only 4 shots from the floor and was muzzled for
6 points.
The Herd, which controlled
the backboards 42-24, captured 19 offensive rebounds.
The Pirates return home
for a C-USA matchup on Wednesday with Tulsa. The contest tips off at 7
p.m.
