Pirates' big comeback
falters

East Carolina stormed back
from a 22-point first half deficit to a 3-point lead before Central
Florida mounted a mini-rally of its own in the game's final minutes to
defeat the Pirates 71-66 Saturday night in Greenville.
Junior forward Jermaine
Taylor scored a career-high 32 points and senior guard David Noel added
14 as the Golden Knights improved to 3-0 in Conference USA, 10-7 overall
and 8-0 all-time versus ECU.
The Knights were hot and
the Pirates (7-9, 1-2 C-USA) were not as UCF raced to a 29-7 lead in the
game's first 13:34 and appeared poised to put the contest out of reach
by halftime.
But East Carolina found
its shooting touch and began the long comeback.
Junior guard James Legan
nailed a three with 5:35 left in the game to put the Pirates in front
52-51, and freshman guard Brock Young added a runner 23 seconds later
that extended the advantage to three.
That's when UCF began its
own surge, outscoring ECU 20-12 down the stretch to end the Pirates'
three-game home winning streak.
The Knights' accuracy at
the free throw line was a factor in the outcome. UCF made 15 of 16 foul
shots on the night, including 10 of 10 in the game's decisive final
minutes.
Legan scored 20 points and
junior guard Sam Hinnant produced 13 to account for half of East
Carolina's offensive output.
Central Florida led at the
half 36-23.
The Pirates now turn their
attention to a matchup at UAB on Wednesday. The league contest tips
off at 8 p.m.
